Medium : Rice paper, rose paper, ink, rose stems, artist’s dyed hair 467 x 110 cm
This work is a tribute to the quiet power
of making by hand, and to the women whose labour often
remains invisible, confined within the walls of the home. I
grew up watching my mother knit long winter garments for
our family—an act of care passed down from her own
mother. Small fragments of paper were
carefully collaged onto my mother’s saree to form a
template, echoing the patience and precision of domestic
making. Once the paper surface was fully constructed, it
was gently peeled off, leaving behind the memory of the
saree’s texture and form. Onto this detached skin, rose
stems are joined and pierced through, rising and extending
along its length like a growing vine. Where the red bloom of
a rose might be expected, I offer instead my own rolled
and dyed hair—replacing the flower with something that
has been a part of my body.
